New Plan For Eye Disorders Announced by Province

(Page 2)

Good news for Alberta residents between the ages of 18 and 65 with eye problems!

A new contract agreement between the Province's Optometrists and Alberta Health and Wellness allows full coverage on the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan for disorders of the eye.

The new cost will be $43-million compared to the previous $39 million and Alberta Health and Wellness Minister Gene Zwozdesky says the Province is promising funding over the next five years even if there's a change in government.

Some Albertans are concerned our taxes may go higher, however Zwozdesky says tax-payers shouldn't worry.

Plan holders will receive eye benefits starting April 1st and along with the new contract Zwozdesky says they've created programs to cure eye diseases earlier in youth.

That particular program brings eye examinations to kindergarten students and provides them with a pair of free glasses if they require a prescription. Last year alone they handed out over 1200 pairs.
